For me it was never just the music. While the music is what first attracted me, it was the people that really sucked me in. That first concert, wading into the street carnival that was the parking lot scene and meeting huge numbers of friendly and generous people from all over the country left an impression on me that I hold dear to this day. Folks like the majority of you here cannot easily be found in day to day life, and having a singular point around which we can all gather and share a common love is something I have not found anywhere else (no, gathering at a sports bar and arguing over fantasy football is NOT the same thing). This also may explain why we are so touchy about perceived threats to the community. If we were to ever lose this sense of family and belonging, I think we would all be lesser for it.

Bingo SDH, I always loved the scene as well as the tunes.
Very well said as usual. I used to love going up to MSG.
No parking lot there. Hundred's of heads walking around
Amongst all the suite's and ties and tourist wondering
what the hell was going on. Good tunes, Good people and
some damn fine times!!

Stangers stopping strangers just to shake their hand!!!

i was drivin down a back road one summer as a teenager, and i had a stack of cd's in my back seat. i reached back and grabbed without looking first, and what do i have here? this bloody red lettering on a black bacround with some morbid skeleton staring at me. what's this? i don't remember buying this thing. oh, yeah, the bunch of bmg cd's i ordered for a penny a piece! it was that two disc best of the dead thingie. hmmm, what the heck, i'll pop it in and see what happens. such a weird representation of the band's music was conveyedto me on this album, it at least piqued my curiousity for more. led me to american beauty, and of course, after am beauty, need i say more? that record changed my life. the kind, sweet, acoustic, mellow dead was instilled in my soul. jerry's voice was a soothing inspiration to me. opened me up to whole new worlds of meaning . i'm 16, i'm a dumb kid at the time, but i received the dead's message and took it to heart, long after the album was done playing. i dropped lsd, lost my virginity, while dark star from live dead swirled around my bedroom one night. do not underestimate the power of the spirit of the dead.
